Hagren/Bela is an artist duo based in Stockholm, Sweden. Weronika Bela (b. 1988) and Ivar Hagren
(b. 1986) hold degrees in fine art from Konstfack (MFA) and photography from HDK Valand
(BFA).
Their work derives from theory, phenomena and the history of photography. Working primarily with
analog black-and-white photography, they employ both traditional and experimental darkroom
techniques. Additionally they utilize graphite drawing, objects, archival material, and video.
By implementing interdisciplinary approaches from fields such as meteorology, biology and
agriculture they aim to broaden our understanding of the photographic image.
In the works shown in Österängens Konsthall dead pine trees and Japanese ascetic monks serve as
metaphors, allowing exploration of ideas concerning death and possible immortality through the
photographic medium.
